Sunset on the SoundWe have completed some property maintenance and had a bit of vacation and we are happy to be back, despite the snow! In fact the snow adds to the beauty and quiet of the Cape in the "off season." As long as one bundles up walks along the beach are pretty spectacular in the winter, with crisp cold air and bright blue skies, and especially romantic at sunset. The one pictured here was taken last week. Up until mid to late February the sun still is far enough in the south to set over Nantucket Sound where this shot was taken. Come and join us for a romantic getaway - this year Valentine's Day and President's Day make for a great long weekend!

Parking Lot SunsetAs our regular season winds down we have a bit more time for leisurely pursuits, like mall shopping. Of course, not everyone likes to shop. Shopping for Marie and I means that we both go our for a drive that eventually leads to the mall. When we get there Marie goes in to shop while I find a great place to park and read that book I've been wanting to read all summer! The picture at left shows that even a mall parking lot can provide some pretty spectacular scenery on Cape Cod. This picture was taken at sunset from the Cape Cod Mall parking lot in Hyannis. It was a bout 6:30 in the evening when I took this shot, but it won't be too long before we turn the clocks back and we'll be dark at around 4:45pm! Check out our schedule for November and December and join us for a brief getaway before the snow starts to fly. If only one of you wants to shop just ask and I can tell you some of the best parking places!

Sacred Heart SongsSummer is almost past us and with autumn comes the long awaited release of Marie's new book, Sacred Heart Songs. Read about Marie's Reiki journey through fibromyaligia to wellness, and stories from many of the people she has worked with over the years. Join Marie on Oct 12th for a discussion about her work. You can learn more about Marie's new book below:

  • Is your body craving energy?
  • Are you challenged by insomnia?
  • Fibromyalgia?
  • Trauma?
  • Chronic pain?
  • Is unfinished business in your life holding you back from reaching your potential?

Share in the stories of those who have traveled similar paths and learn about the benefits of Reiki upon their well-being.  Through a unique weaving of spirit and science, Sacred Heart Songs provides clear markers along the path to safety and wellness, freeing the songs of our hearts.  Each of us has an inner wisdom, intimately woven in God’s spirit of  truth.  This wisdom is waiting to guide us through disease to wellness. Contemplative reflections at the end of each chapter engage the process of dialoging with our hearts and souls as they call out to us with the truths and dreams of our lives.

Sacred Heart Songs is scheduled for release in early October and you can find it online and at fine bookstores everywhere!

WavesCheck out these "Sound Waves." This picture was taken at one of Nantucket Sound's normally lake-like beaches last Sunday evening as Marie and I went for a stroll. As a front rolled through the winds roared and kicked up some surf. Soon this beach will be filled with summer vacationers enjoying warm summer days. Even now the weather is spectacular this week and warm enough for Cape Adventures. Check out our early June specials - there are lots of packages with something for everyone. We look forward to welcoming old friends and new as the summer unfolds. See you soon!

French Toast StrataWe are "inn" season!  Each year Jim and I seek to meet the needs of our guests at a more personal level.  This year we are introducing dietary choices to support the variety of needs of our guests.  If you have a special dietary need such as nut free, gluten free, dairy free, diabetic, or plant based we will be pleased to provide a breakfast choice that you will be able to enjoy.
I have great recipes for gluten free muffins and vegan coffee cakes, and yes, I am very happy to share them.  Is dairy a problem?  We will be happy to substitute rice or soy milk for you.  If you are diabetic we can support you with additional protein.
All that we ask is that you make us aware of this need when you are making your reservation with a minimum of a seven day notice.  We are enjoying great bookings for this season.  Why wait until summer?  Come and join us now!  Marie & Jim

Chairs in WinterSnow seems to keep flying in New England during February weekends. We survived the "Wintercane" two weeks ago and then got a follow up storm just a week later. The picture shows the chairs in our Labyrinth Garden. Even with all the snow we did get, Cape Cod got less overall than much of the rest of the state. If all this snow has left you with cabin fever, break into a summer patter by booking your summer 2013 stay now. Just give us a call - we'll guarantee you last summer's rates if you book now.

January 5, 2013

As has become our custom, Allen Harbor Breeze Inn and Gardens will be closed during the month of January so that staff can get some vacation and to provide some time for our annual maintenance. But you can still book your stay online. Just look at the top right hand corner of any page - in the banner section - and click on the "Check Availability or Book Now" link. It's safe and secure. Booking now for summer 2013 has some advantages - since we have not yet set our 2013 summer rates they remain the same as 2012 for now - book early and we will, of course, honor the rate. We look forward to seeing our regular friends and to meeting new ones!

ThanksgivingHappy Thanksgiving to all our friends! Our gardens are put to sleep fr the winter now. We've cut back almost all of the plants and we've got only a bit more raking to do - it will wait until after Thanksgiving. Then we'll put up the holiday lights and get ready to celebrate a favorite season! As is our custom, we'll be open during the week between Christmas and New Year's - join us for a chance to get away after all the holiday fun. We are a wonderful place to stay if you plan to celebrate First Night in Chatham - it's only a fifteen minute drive away. If you want to visit the Cape for some holiday shopping be sure to check our availability - while we are closed for the Christmas Holiday we are open by reservation in December. Use our online "check availability" box to see if we can accommodate your stay.

October 28, 2012

As we come to the end of October we are not only preparing for our November Specials and winter, but also for Hurricane Sandy. Sandy is a very unusual visitor for this time of year. We've both lived in New England for all of our lives and can't remember a hurricane hitting this late in the season. There have, however, been some unnamed storms that have been serious in October and November, and we're not taking any chances with Sandy. We've spent the last couple of days securing the property and putting away outside furniture a bit earlier than usual. It never hurts to be prepared! Looking into November we're offering some great specials - join us on the first weekend of the month, or on the holiday weekend (November 11th). The Cape has some great places to get your holiday shopping done early and find some truly unique gifts. Hope to see you soon!

Welcome to our new website! We've simplified our home page to make it more appealing visually. The garden pictures on our home page were taken this past summer by Julie . We hope you enjoy it. As summer morphs into autumn the warmth seems to have continued. We've had the busiest Semptember ever and October promises to be a beautiful month as well. Check out our October specials and come enjoy Cape Cod during the Fall season - local fairs, great sales in our local shops, and free parking at all of our gorgeous beaches. Now is the time to get away and relax - we've got your room waiting for you!

Earle Rd. BeachAs we transition into our late summer mode traffic is lighter, guests can go to any of the Cape's magnificent beaches without the need for parking stickers and the birds are enjoying the bountiful grapes before they are able to ripen!  Many weddings take place on Cape Cod in the fall at nearby Wychmere Beach Club, Wequassett Resort, Oceans Edge Resort and The Lighthouse inn.  We are fortunate to be of service to wedding parties and guests as they celebrate these momentous occasions.

Jim & I have a bit more time to experience Harwich from a tourist's perspective. After a late lunch at The Outer Grille at the Wequassett Resort we made a detour into Sundae School. Today I delighted in Peach Yogurt while Jim enjoyed Mocha Chip.

There is also a bit more time to enjoy the neighborhood! Yesterday morning I had a fabulous early morning walk down Wah Wah Taysee Rd. and onto the beach.  As the waves gently lapped over my feet I focused on the expansive beauty of Nantucket Sound.  Although we do NOT have seals and sharks we do have the gentle invitation into the abundance of nature’s goodness.  Join us as summer continues to unfold on Cape Cod!  We have beach chairs and towels to share.  See you soon!  Marie & Jim

flower in front gardenAs I walked to the mailbox to get the newspapers this morning I was greeted by the goldfinch enjoying their breakfast of Black Eyed Susan seeds.  These lovely creatures enjoyed a diet of coreopsis during June and July and now are getting a bit of variety in the Black-eyed Susans!  Our guests are eagerly greeted with their beauty as they turn onto Nehoiden Street to enter our parking lot. Our plantings have multiplied so many times that we are now able to make yearly donations to the Sampson Fund which raises money through plant sales for the local animal shelter. We are also quite happy to share plants with guests to bring home, there are more than enough to go around!
Each Tuesday morning we open our gardens to artists who are looking for a special place to engage their talents. Recently we were graced with the presence of a young artist named Sophie who has just moved to the cape. The patio made a great spot for Sophie to spread out her water colors and ink to create a bit of whimsical beauty!  You are invited to go to our facebook page to see her work of art in progress. We still have availability in August for those of you who are looking for a last minute getaway.  Check out our specials, we await your presence with us!

Kids in poolWe have just been named one of five kid-friendly bed & breakfasts in the US by NBC Online TODAY! We are most grateful to our guests who wrote in about their experiences at Allen Harbor Breeze Inn & Gardens. One of our guests, Thomas Jendrock is quoted about the personal touch and knowledge of his preferences he experienced when he and his family were with us in June.   He shared the following with NBC TODAY:  “I have found searching for family friendly B&B's to be a frustrating experience (but ultimately rewarding in this case).  I have been vacationing on Cape Cod each June for over 5 years with my family (including my wife Karen, our 3 1/2 year old Julian, and our 1 1/2 year old Justin).  In the past, we had stayed at my dad's summer home in Yarmouth.  I knew that he intended to sell the Cape house, so last year I researched B&B's which are centrally located on Cape Cod and which are family friendly.  During our vacation last year, we visited at least a half dozen candidates, including the Allen Harbor Breeze Inn.  Karen and I were in agreement that the AHBI was our clear first choice, and we made our reservations for this June several months in advance.

The ABHI is located on a quiet country road, across the street from a scenic harbor, docks and boats.  The inn grounds have extensive and beautiful flower gardens, with colorful birds (goldfinches, cardinals, etc.) and bunnies.  Our family stayed in the Cathedral Room, which was perfect for accommodating two adults and two young children.  The room was quiet, clean and comfortable, with many personal touches.  Every morning, we went next door to the dining room for the continental breakfast of healthy food which we all enjoyed (including the children).  Marie asked what breakfast foods we would like in order to accommodate our preferences.  Likewise, Marie arranged for the housecleaning staff to clean our room each day at the time most convenient for our family.  I asked our son Julian (3 years old) several times during and after vacation whether he liked the B&B, our room, the breakfasts, and Marie & Jim, and he always smiled and said yes.  We are all in agreement.”
Jim & I really enjoy welcoming families whether they be with young children or teenagers, there is room for everyone!  To read more go to todaytravel.today.msnbc.msn.com.

Mourning Doves Jim and AdamJim and SignWe've been busy the last few weeks sprucing up the buildings and grounds. Jim removed some siding that had been on the main building since the 1960's! A testimony to the endurance of cedar shingles used on so many cape cod buildings. He had a lot of help along the way, including some hands-on help from our visiting nephew Adam (with Jim in picture above to the right). Of special note was the Inspection committee pictured at the top left. If you look closely you'll see two mourning doves giving the job a once over (on the edge of the roofline and on the top step of the ladder). God's sense of humor is alive and well! In the last picture to the right Jim rehangs the old "Harbor Breeze" sign that Marie repainted. Most of the exterior work is now completed, and the gardens are absolutely spectacular this year - and quite early. Marie wondering what they will look like this year in the second half of July, since what we have now is not usually out until then!

French Toast Strata Here is the history behind our signature French Toast Strata...In July of 2002 I awoke extra early one morning to make two dozen raisin scones.  They were not a favorite, 19 of them were left over at the end of breakfast.  Unwilling to throw them out I remembered the delicious bread puddings my mother made when we were young.  Crumbling the scones into a greased 9x13 inch baking pan I decided to add orange zest along with 4 cups of milk, 10 eggs, 1/2 cup of brown sugar.  After I let it sit in the refrigerator overnight I baked it at 350F for one hour.  Our guests took great delight in the bread pudding, no leftovers that morning!  Over the years I have created various combinations, blueberries and lemon, apple almond, peaches and coconut to name a few.  In 2006 French Toast Strata became the "inn" breakfast to serve.  Taking the same basic recipe and adding cream cheese to the mix we created Strata!  These have become our signature dishes, with repeat guests requesting them when they make their next reservation!  This weekend's strata will be raspberry and cream cheese with a dash of lemon zest!  Join us!  Marie & Jim

Our First SignHappy Anniversary to us!  It is hard to believe that ten years ago today we closed on the Harbor Breeze Inn at 11:00am and were making beds by 1:00pm!  Jim & I received a crash course in innkeeping!  Our chambermaid, Jana, arrived from the Czech Republic on my birthday, the best gift I receive that year!   I remember reading tourist guides as I ate breakfast each day to get acclimated to upper cape, mid-cape and lower cape.  Peter & Charlene Malikowski were our saving grace during their stay in early July as they acted as tour guides each morning at breakfast.  Jim & I listened attentively to their recommendations for beaches, restaurants, and shops!  In September Jim & I finally had time to be tourists ourselves to check out the places we recommended throughout the summer on their advice!   Throughout this summer will be traveling down memory lane, sharing with you the adventures and escapades we have encountered as innkeepers in Harwich Port.  We will also include our guest’s experiences through notations from our guestbook over the years.  On July 8, 2002 Peg and Mary Ann wrote:   “Harbor Breeze – a site that is both restful and serene.  The accommodations are all that one would want and the delightful breakfast is a special treat!  The pool has been a source of enjoyment -  when we have not been swimming in the ocean!  To those who come after us we hope you will enjoy it as much as we have!”

CourtyardIt's hard to believe that summer is just about upon us!  We are excited to begin our 11th season as innkeepers here at Allen Harbor Breeze Inn and Gardens.  Returning guests will notice  a new look to our garden courtyard this year.  The twin juniper trees that served as bookends in our oval garden have been removed, providing for a much  more open space.  It also has the added benefit of allowing more light into our Garden Side Rooms.   To go along with the new look we’re offering a new low pre-summer price on our Garden Side Rooms – just $120 per night from Memorial Day through June 24th.  It’s a great opportunity to enjoy the early summer warmth of Cape Cod and save up to $65 per night from peak summer rates.  Join us and get your summer on early!

AHB Blog March 27

Painting by Ann O'Callaghan
In like a lamb and out like a lion, the March winds are roaring quite loudly today!  We have gone from an early summer back into the early spring mode.  Cranberry growers are watching the thermostat carefully, ready to protect the emerging buds by sprinkling water on them to encase them in ice.  Jim & I are busy caring for the guestrooms in preparation of another great season.  Once again we will be opening our gardens for artists to join us on Talented Tuesdays.   It is such a joy to wander through local galleries and Art in the Park on Mondays and see the serene beauty of our gardens shared with the public.   Artist Ann O’Callaghan will be displaying her watercolors in our dining room once again.  If you have a special spot on our property or a vacation memory that you would like to “take home with you” Ann would be most happy to transform it into art to hang in that special place in your home.   If you prefer pastels, acrylics or oils, we know some excellent artists available to transform your memories that those mediums also!

February 29, 2012

It's a perfect leap day for a blog entry! Happy birthday to all of you who only have a birthday every four years! As we near the beginning of March it seems winter never quite made it to Cape Cod. Even today, while the rest of Massachusetts and Northern New England prepare for March to come in like a lion, we are getting mixed precip that is supposed to turn into all rain. Mind you, we are not complaining! If you find yourselves looking for an early spring, why not hasten its coming with a Cape getaway? We're open - just call ahead to make reservations so that we can have your room warm and ready for you when you get here!

February 10, 2012

Today's front page of the Cape Cod Times showed a picture of daffodils in bloom in Orleans (a short distance from Harwich Port), and the article said it was one of the earliest ever recorded on the Cape. It's been that kind of winter here - temperatures averaging in the 40's! Yet the forcast for tomorrow is snow. That's truly what it means to live in New England! Regardless of the weather it is a perfect time for a getaway. Our rooms are warm and cozy, and there are plenty of restaurants and shops open. And there are miles and miles of beaches to walk. Come and join us for a winter escape here on Cape Cod. Be sure to check out our February specials!

January 1, 2012

As I write this it is quite mild on the Cape, but we know that won't last long! Frigid weather is predicated for later this week. All this cold allows us to catch up on our annual maintenance chores indoors. A much more pleasant thought is summer, with lots of sunshine and warm, pleasant beaches. If you had a chance to talk to family members over the holidays and know when you'll be taking your summer vacation, its not too early to book! You can get the rooms and dates you want while there is still good availability. We will be closed for maintenance and some time away for awhile - if you can't reach us when you try to call you can still book online. Just click on the easy to use buttons from our home page! Happy New Year to all of our friends, new and old. We look forward to seeing you as the weather warms! Jim & Marie

December 4, 2011

Season's Greetings to all of our friends! As December dawns this strange weather (even for New England!) continues to grace us with mild temperatures, thought the long-range forcast says that will end toward the end of this week. Even with temperatures in the forties and fifites Harwich is still festooned for the Holidays, with bright lights, greenery, and ribbons all through the Port. Great restaurants are still open and the shops in the center of town are loaded with great gifs. If you're looking for something truly unique, the Cape is the place to shop, from our local and nearby art galleries to the great antique places along Route 6A. Finish off your day of shopping with a great meal at one of our fine restaurants and then come back to relax in your warm and cozy room here at Allen Harbor Breeze Inn and Gardens. We are open in December by advance reservation. Just give us a call (800-455-0247) or make your reservation online. Best wishes to you and yours for a blessed holiday season!

October 30, 2011

Here on Cape Cod we were spared the amazingly early snow that blanketed other parts of the northeast, but we didn't get away entirely unscathed. Retreatants here over the weekend were treated to 60 mph "breezes" off the water as we endured a rather typical n'oreaster. Lots of leaves and pine needles are everywhere today, but fortunately no large branches or trees came down. Our only problem is that our phone service is out for who knows how long. As is often the case with these kind of storms the next few days should be beautiful and seasonably chilly.

As we enter November and get closer to the winter months its a great time to consider a late autumn getaway. Give us a call and we'll be pleased to work with you.

Author Jamie Cat CallanWe have been so fortunate to have a number of guest speakers and presenters join us as we celebrate our tenth season!  This coming Saturday, October 8, Mashpee Author Jamie Cat Callan joins us from 1:00-2:30pm!  Jamie’s most recent novel, Bonjour Happiness, describes how her special relationship with her grandmother led her to experience “joie de vivre”! Jamie will be speaking about recognizing the joy of the simple things of life from hosting dinner parties to scarf tying.   A special invitation to grandmothers, surrogate grandmothers, granddaughters and everyone in between to share in her stories and book signing.  Delicious refreshments shared in her book will be served.  (Suggested donation of $20 will be graciously accepted to support women from WE CAN to participate in Nicole Sotelo’s retreat at Evensong Retreat & Spirituality Center for women survivors of abuse entitled Discovering Love to be held in spring 2012.)  Jamie Cat Callan grew up under tutelage of her French grandmother, who taught her the secrets of how French women find and keep love.  Jamie is creator of The Writer’s Toolbox and the author of Hooking Up or Holding Out and French Women Do Not Sleep Alone!

We have been so fortunate to have had electrical services throughout the past week and are breathing a sigh of relief with all of our neighbors and past guests who are slowly regaining these services .  It is fascinating to walk down to the beach and view all of the shrubs and trees that are now losing their leaves on the south side of the plant due to the powerful salt spray from Irene.  The poplar tree across the street has shed nearly all of it’s leaves a few weeks earlier than usual because of the salt.  Evenings are cooler and the days are shortening but there are still many opportunities to enjoy fall on Cape Cod.  Harwich welcomes the change in season with many exciting offerings in the Fall for Harwich Series.  Arts & Crafts Festivals, Cranberry Bog Tours, Seaside Clowns and Lobster Roll Suppers are just a few of the exciting opportunities to experience life on Cape Cod free from traffic and parking stickers!!!!!!!!  For more info about Fall For Harwich offerings visit www.harwichcc.com .  Check out our special discounts on our website to find the right package to meet your vacation needs!  We look forward to your visit!  Marie & Jim

Children coloringThese two wonderful children are enjoying the opportunity to create beautiful artwork in our dining room!   We are so fortunate to have families with children join us to add to the specialness of our inn.   When Jim & I purchased Allen Harbor Breeze Inn & Gardens we made it a priority to develop a facility that would support families in having fun, relaxing vacations.  Our spacious gardens, labyrinth, outside decks and porches and relaxing pool area provide space for everyone!  Many children enjoy borrowing the variety of books available in the dining room during their stay.  Time together is the most precious gift that we can give to our children, we are grateful for the opportunity to host your family vacation!

The vegetable garden is thoroughly enjoying this rainy day!  The eggplant are quite lovely, ready to pick this coming weekend and the cukes and zucchini are outdoing themselves!   Here is the recipe for Chocolate Cranberry Zucchini Bread, feel free to add other  favorites to it is such as chocolate chips or nuts!   To make two loaves, grate 3 cups of zucchini and wrap in a clean towel.  Place in a wrapped zucchini in a strainer to allow the liquid to drain.  After about 10 minutes, squeeze out remaining liquid from zucchini through the towel.  Combine 3 eggs, ¾ cup vegetable oil, 1 ½ cups sugar and 2 teaspoons vanilla in a large bowl.  In a medium bowl, combine 2 ½ cups flour, ½ teaspoon baking powder, 2 teaspoons baking soda, ½ cup unsweetened cocoa (I like the Hershey’s dark), ½ cup dried cranberries and 1 teaspoon cinnamon.  Mix dry ingredients together.  Combine wet and dry ingredients.  Add zucchini (and nuts, choc chip, etc.)  Bake in 2 greased loaf pans at 350F for 45 minutes.  These loaves freeze well if there are any leftovers!!!!!   The original recipe came to us from the Sherwood Forest Inn in Saugatuk, Michigan, over the years I have tweaked it to the above. Enjoy!

Our Talented Tuesdays continue to draw incredible artists to document the whimsy and beauty of our gardens.  Today we are fortunate to have six members of The Harwich Artists Guild join us!  Katherine Vacca and Laura Craciun, found the perfect spot on the patio while Chris Banks and Barbara Quinn Grasso enjoyed the whimsy of ducks and black-eyed susans, with the gift of a butterfly!  Katherine was painting with watercolors in the miniature this morning to accommodate her broken arm, but the cast comes off next week!  Laura utilized her gift with pastels to paint the attached Enchanting Angel (at least that is my title for it!).  Ann O’Callaghan was with us again, enjoying the shade while she captured the beauty of the verbena and Doris Mee used watercolors to paint “Retreat”, a view of the adarondack chair by the labyrinth.  We are so gifted to have artists come and share their skills with our guests and one another!  Jim & I really share in the joy of each person’s presence with us, come and share in our joy!

Summer continues to be just fabulous!  The pool is the favorite spot these past few days, space to lounge, read, sleep, swim or just to be.  Vacations are such a great time to just be in the moment.  Our resident cardinals will serenade you with the self-importance of each simple thing that we do.  Staring at clouds or the water clears the mind to make pathways for rest and rejuvenation, inviting creativity to come forth from the hidden recesses of our beings.  The word most used to describe Allen Harbor Breeze Inn & Gardens is peaceful.
It is our privilege to provide a beautiful, peaceful space for our guests to rest from the stresses of life to be renewed for the promise of tomorrow.  Come be our guest!  Marie & Jim

July 28, 2011

We are so fortunate to have many repeat guests all summer long and to welcome new visitors to experience the peacefulness and beauty of our space.  We are honored to have Tom & Christine S. with us, (their 20th year at Allen Harbor Breeze Inn & Gardens) as they celebrate their 38th wedding anniversary!  It is such a joy to provide an opportunity for newlyweds and anniversary couples to return again and again as they honor the specialness of their relationships with us!  Private decks, jacuzzi’s and fireplaces add an ambience of privacy and relaxation for rest and renewal all year long.

7-20-blog

We love having many repeat guests year after year and our guest book contains so many wonderful memories!  We thought you might like to read about some of these experiences!  On July 5th Kelley and her son Sam from Seattle, WA wrote, “Leaving today after 4 perfect night.  What a lovely escape on Cape Cod!  Simple, cozy, friendly, just like old Cape Cod I remember.  Thank you!  Diana & Kit Herring wrote on July 16th,  ” We enjoyed the Cape more than ever this year, thanks to you, Jim & Marie! It is always so lovely to stay in your gardenside rooms, swim in the pool and gobble down a sumptuous breakfast.  Thanks so much we hope to be back next year!

It is such an incredible week!  Every Saturday morning Katherine Trainor leads Yoga by the Labyrinth at 9:00am for our guests and interested public.  Katherine is my favorite kind of yoga teacher, gently taking us into the poses and back out again.  Last Saturday our resident cardinal joined in by serenading throughout the entire 75 minutes!  We are also looking forward to Marcia Moeder RN, LMT, ZB joining us on Tuesday, July 19 from 10:30am-noon to teach Sweet Relief, The Art of Hand and Foot Massage.  Come and put your feet up in the beauty of our gardens and learn about the Marma points for health and wellbeing!

Rose Petal Bracelet I had so much fun making rose beads that I decided to make beads out of the roses I received for my birthday!  It is such a great way to have the roses as a keepsake of a beautiful day! As I strung the beads this afternoon I was inspired to use smaller accent beads from my grandmother's wedding dress, an intergenerational keepsake!  I also collected many more of the knockout rose petals this afternoon before the rain comes in this evening!  They are currently drying in wicker baskets for future use. Roses near AHB SignThe knockout roses are incredible once again!  On June 20th I spent a part of the morning gathering rose petals from the gardens to make rose beads. After taking off the white shells at the beginning of the petals, I chopped the petals in the food processor until very fine, covered with a bit of water in a pan and cooked on the stovetop for one hour, then letting them cool for an hour and then cooking them for another hour.  If I had used a cast iron skillet the rose mash would turn black, but this time I prefer the deep crimson color.  To make each bead I took a heaping 1/4 t. of rose mash and formed it into a ball (twice the size of the finished bead). Then I pierced each bead with floral wire and have been drying them slowly in our gas oven. Turning the beads each day is critical, two more days and they will be ready to string!  There are so many opportunities to be creative with our gardens, stay tuned for upcoming activities!  Enjoy the day!  Marie

We've been going full steam ahead with our spring preparations for summer. The gardens are all edged and have a new coat of mulch. The lawns are full and thick and the pool is uncovered. Just another couple of weeks and summer will be here! This coming summer we celebrate our tenth season as owners. During the past ten years we have worked to make Allen Harbor Breeze Inn & Gardens our own. All the rooms have had makeovers and the grounds have been redesigned with an acre of gardens. We are celebrating our tenth year with some special offers for our guests and with a variety of events throughout the summer season. It begins on June 3rd at 11am with a special presentation by Consultant and Cullinary Instructor Joanne Irwin on How Foods Fight Cancer. Donations from the event will go to support the Garden Project at the Harwich Food Pantry. Watch for our June newsletter - it will contain a complete list of what's coming, including Yoga by the Labyrinth and "Talented Tuesdays!"

Spring GardenEach time we get to work outside to prep the gardens we find increasing evidence of Spring. It's a fun time of year when we get to see the grounds in the earliest stages of what they will soon become. It's also the time when we spruce up the rooms getting ready for all of our return guests and the new friends who'll join us in the coming months for some great vacation time. This year we've put in new bathroom floors in some of the rooms and the rugs have all just been professionally cleaned. Touch up work will continue in each room so that when you get here your room will be spotlessly clean and comfortable enough to spoil you! This year why not get an early start on vacation time? Come and spend a few days with us and enjoy Spring on Cape Cod. Many of our fine restaurants and shops are open, the golf courses are waiting for you, and there are some quiet beaches that you can stroll. We hope to see you soon!

March 23, 2011

Picture of SnowdropsWe've begun the annual spring cleanup of the gardens and there are always surprises waiting for us under the piles of pine needles, leaves and branches that have fallen during the winter months. The picture at left is one of the more pleasant surprises - a small crop of snowdrops. These hearty little guys will survive almost anything, even should there be one more surprise snowfall! That sure seemed unlikely this past week as temperatures climbed into the low sixties, but as any New Englander knows, you can't count winter completely out until sometime in April. Among the different plants that require some spring trimming are our many and various trees. We trimmed and removed hundreds of pounds of low hanging branches from the cedar trees, scrub pines, maples and oaks. Quite a couple of days' work - We're grateful that only has to be done every two or three years! All of this is a sure sign that not only spring is here, but that summer isn't that far off. Check our availability online to be sure to get the dates and room you want for your summer vacation, or give us a call and we'll be glad to help you!,

March 1, 2011

March came in this year not like a lion but like a lamb. Even though the temperature was in the thirties the sun was shining brightly and made our daily walk the first one to truly hint of Spring around the corner. On the walk to town we saw several gardens with tiny green shoots beginning to poke their heads through the still hard ground. Despite the still chilly temperatures of late winter the sun will soon win out and before you know it summer will be rolling around again. This year advance bookings are coming in early, especially for summer weekends. We're still in the process of making calls to our regular yearly guests but if we haven't gotten to you yet and you know your summer schedule give us a call so that we can be sure to reserve the room and dates that you want. If you've never stayed with us we'd be delighted to host your Cape Cod summer vacation - let us help you get the perfect room and the perfect setting to enjoy warm sunshine, beautiful beaches, lots of fun activities and wonderful restaurants, all close by. Call to make reservations today!

February 11, 2011

Tired of snow everywhere you look?! Come and join us for a quick late-winter getaway. No, it's not spring here yet, but we have no snow on the ground! While several of the recent storms produced record snow around New England this part of Cape Cod got mostly rain. Winter is still here, of course, and temperatures this past week certainly testified to that as we were in the low twenties for a good part of the time. We're slowly moderating now and next week looks like we'll be in the upper thirties during the daytime. So if you're weary of looking out your window at three feet of snow cover, give us a call and head down to Cape Cod for a weekend or mid-week escape. Many of our wonderful restaurants are open year round and have some great specials during these off-season months. Our beaches are quiet and make for beautiful walks when you bundle up. Break up your cabin-fever weeks and come on down and join us!

December 29, 2010

Seasons greetings and Happy New Year! It has been an exciting month for us personally as we got to spend time with relatives and friends to celebrate the holidays. And our family was blessed with the wonderful gift of a new addition - Natalie Marie Gagnon, our second grandchild, joined us on December 1st! Everyone is doing fine and her mom and dad are adjusting to life with two children. We have been traveling a bit between here and northern New England, which is where most of our family lives. Even so, our December season has been busy and the last couple of nights in 2010 find us with just a few rooms left as people take advantage of the brief warm up in the weather to celebrate New Year's Eve with First Night in Chatham. As the year comes to an end we want to say a special thanks to all the guests who stayed with us in 2010 - we look forward to seeing many of you come Summer 2011, our tenth summer season. Now is the time to reserve your summer 2011 stay so that you get the dates and the room you want. As always, we'll be doing our callbacks in February for our regular guests and all the people who requested them. In the meantime we'll be closed during January for our annual vacation and maintenance time, but you can still reserve online. Again, Happy 2011 to everyone!

November 24, 2010

Happy Thanksgiving! The leaves are off the trees now as the winds of November worked their magic! Pine needles seemed to be in abundant supply this year as last week's 40 mph gusts shook the long needle pine trees and they dropped their treasures, covering our walkways and gutters! They are wonderful to walk through, providing a soft cushion underfoot, but they have to be removed before snow flies becuase they can really clog a snowblower blade and provide a great base for an ice-dam in the gutters. Fortunately we had some warm days last week and Jim was able to get the gutters cleared out while Marie worked with our all-around helper, Ashley, to get the walks cleared. We also had help last weekend from a bunch of friends who helped us fill the trailer to overflowing and make our final leaf-trips to the the town transfer station, where leaves and clippings are recycled into free compost for next spring.

As we approach the holidays we wish you all of the goodness of the season. Our availability varies during the season as we take time with our own family, but we do accept stays by advance reservation, so give us a call and we'll be glad to help you!

October 15, 2010

Has the Autumn color passed where you live? It's just hitting its peak here on Cape Cod, and we likely still have a couple of weeks left. Southern New England usually peaks after Columbus Day and this year is no exception. It has been an outstanding Fall on the Cape, following in the footsteps of a spectacular summer. The summer was practically rain-free, and even though we've had some days of rain here and there this autumn (there's a nor'easter forcaste for tomorrow) there have ben tons of bright and sunny days, allowing for some great leaf peeping, hiking, biking, and even exploring our beautiful beaches. Or perhpaps golf or fishing is your pleasure. We've got it all. And did we mention great shopping and dining experiences? All of our shops are still open - check out our great shopping here in Harwich, or nearby in Chatham - or go antiguing along Route 6A - it all makes for a wonderful New England Autumn experience. Top off your day with an excellent dining experience at one of our many Harwich restaurants - they are all still open. Then come back to your comfortable room at Allen Harbor Breeze Inn and finish the day with a nightcap by the fireplace in our Cathedral room, or a relaxing jacuzzi in our Treetop Suite. It's all waitingn for you - call us now to reserve!

October 1, 2010

September has flown by and, strangely, we are still experiencing very warm day. Yesterday was in the high 70's and humid, and today, while rain is forecoast, is also quite warm. But they tell us that such warmth is on the wane. We can expect some cooler temperatures in the days ahead, and that's a good thing! October on Cape Cod is a wonderful Autumn experience. Cranberry bogs are being harvested, the leaves are just starting to turn. The cool weather, usually in the 60's during the day, makes for inviting walks on the beach, or for wonderful biking on the rail trail. This is the season for some great early Christmas shopping, or perhaps for a romantic afternoon of antigue hunting along Route 6A. Come back to the Inn for a late afternoon nap, then step out for a wonderful meal at one of our many fine restaurants. Nothing beats Autumn in New England, and one of the best ways to experience it is on Cape Cod. We look forward to having you join us!

September 18, 2010

Here we are at the last weekend of Summer 2010! It has been such a busy summer that we haven't had the chance to blog since last June. An amazing summer weather-wise. We had only about three days of rain during June, July and August - not a good average rainfall, but it surely made for some great vacation time. Even the close brush with Hurricane Earl on Labor Day weekend didn't seem to slow things down. And the great weather is continuing, making September the perfect month for another getaway. Autumn on Cape Cod is one of the best kept secrets in New England. The days are still warm enough for some beach time, and the nights are nice and cool for sleeping. Just about all of the restaurants and activities are still open but not as crowded as in summer - it's the perfect setting for your getaway. If you stayed with us for the first time this past summer you now qualify for our return guest rate. There's still time for your Autumn escape - call us now!

June 2, 2010

What an amazing spring! In just two days we will celebrate the beginning of our ninth year as owners of Allen Harbor Breeze Inn and Gardens and in all that time this easily quallifies as the best spring we've experienced on Cape Cod. Our gardens are running about two weeks early. The knockout roses in our front gardens are just beginning to bloom and they are spectacular. Treat yourself to a pre-summer getaway for a couple of days with our special offer above. On another note, Marie is really into Facebook! Become a Fan of Allen Harbor Breeze Inn & Gardens on Facebook and follow Marie's entries on what is going on here at the Inn. Over the years numerous people have asked us what is involved in the day to day operation of an inn. Marie's goal over the next few months is to post some day to day happenings on our Facebook page to help give people a sense of what it takes to run an inn. Let us know that you've become a fan and we'll have a special gift for you on your next stay at the Inn!

After months of traffic jams and delays all four lanes are back in operation, and traffic is moving well, even on the weekends. Come celebrate with us and save with our Spring Specials. This has been one of the best spring seasons in years on Cape Cod. Our gardens are at least two weeks ahead of schedule and the days are warm and long. It's a perfect time of year to be on the Cape. April 21, 2010

Spring at Allen Harbor Breeze Inn & Gardens As with much of New England this year spring has come early and quickly to Cape Cod. This shot from our roadside gardens shows daffodils in bloom some two weeks earlier than usual. To celebrate the early warmth we're offering some great Spring Special Packages. We've also added some new discounts to our regular rates - AAA and AARP members can now receive discoutns, and past guests have special discounts as well. You can learn more about these at our regular website - these are a great opportunity to get away for a couple of days midweek or for a weekend escape. Many of our great restaurants are open and ready to greet you and even some of the summer places are starting to open their doors. A&W Drive-in nearby to us has opened - a sure sign to locals that summer is just around the corner -and (my personal favorite!) Sundae School Ice Cream Parlor is open again on weekends! Hope you can join us soon. Also read the blog entry below this one for a great way to save on family summer fun by vacationing early!

November 2009

Can you believe it?! Thanksgiving week is upon us already. Most of the trees are prepared for winter here on Cape Cod, having lost the last of their leaves during last week's windstorm. And despite the temperature being unusually warm the Thanksgiving Holiday is less than a week away. We are open over the Holidays this year and happy to meet your needs for a room if you are visiting relatives for Thanksgiving or Christmas. Family celebrations can be wonderful and sometimes they are even more delightful when you have your own room to retreat to after a fun-filled family day. At day's end a nice meal at one of our great local restaurants makes for a good fllow up to yesterday's turkey. It's all here for you at Allen Harbor Breeze - a great room ove rthe holday at a reasonable price. Happy Thanksgiving!

October 2009

ARE YOU A LEAF PEEPER LOOKING FOR LEAVES TO PEEP? Look no further! In Northern New England the foliage usually peaks by Columbas Day but here on Cape Cod the leaves are just beginning to turn. The scenery on the Rail Trail (our 30 mile hiking and biking trail) is magnificent. Cranberry bogs, ripe and red and ready for harvest abound, and compliment the yellows, reds and oranges of the different trees along the trail. Nearer to the ocean at Coast Gaurd Beach the splendor of the marshes in their golden brown contrast the blue of the ocean as you gaze out at the Autumn sea. Allen Harbor Breeze Inn & Gardens is the perfect location from which to tour the best Autumn scenes on Cape Cod and our Autumn rates mean savings for you. Spend your days enjoying the beautiful foliage, the Fall Fairs and the great shopping bargains. Come back to the Inn to rest a bit, then top off the day with a great meal at one of our many local restaurats. The Cape is a wonderful place to get some time away before the busy Holiday season arrives - plan your New England Autumn getaway now!

Sept. 2009

READY OR NOT AUTUMN IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER WITH ALL OF ITS BEAUTY! HERE ON CAPE COD September and October are often referred to as being among the Cape's best kept secrets. The Cape is such a wonderful summer spot but for some folks Autumn is even better. It is much less crowded and virtually everything is still open. Days are usually warm (mid to low 70's in September and mid to low 60's in October) with nights that are nice and cool for sleeping. Great weather for beaches, for biking or hiking the rail trail, for golf or water activites. Ferries and the whale watching boats remain open through October.
This year the Harwich Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring Fall for Harwich - a fun series of events and activities during September and October. Allen Harbor Breeze Inn and Gardens is joining in the fun by offering an Autumn Art Series. We hope you'll join us for a "Cape Escape" over the next few weeks!

Aug. 2009

THE DOG DAYS OF SUMMER HAVE ARRIVED BUT IT'S STILL COOLER HERE ON THE CAPE and we have a room just for you! Cool off in our beautiful pool, or take a short (1/3 mile) walk down pleasant Wequassett Street and you'll be at the beach on Nantucket Sound. The ocean water temp is pleasantly cool at about 70 degrees. All the rains earlier this season, as unpleasant as they became, nevertheless have left us with beautiful gardens this year. Each couple of weeks brings a new set of blooms with vibrant reds, purples, and yellows now gracing our courtyard. The gardens continue their unfolding through the middle of September, so there's always lots to see. For a bit about the history behind our gardens visit the most recent edition of our newsletter, NOTES FROM THE SEA. If we haven't seen you yet this season we hope to - enjoy the rest of the summer!

March 2009

"Staycation!" It was a term coined last summer when the price of gasoline was over $4.00 per gallon. It referred to the idea that with travel far away being so expensive, coming to the Cape was a great way to "stay" close to home and vacation all at the same time! This summer, with money so tight for all of us, the "staycation" option remains a great one. The Cape is close by to all of the New England States and to New York and New Jersey. For a tankful of gas or less you can vacation with that far away feeling while staing close to home. The Cape is a wonderful world apart from the hectic busy pace of work and the city. Our beautiful beaches are easy to access (especially from Allen Harbor Breeze Inn & Gardens). The beaches of Nantucket Sound are just a pleasant one-third of a mile walk and very child friendly. Or, if you are looking for beaches with more wave action the National Seashore is only a 30 minute ride and boasts some of the world's best beaches. Come back after your fun at the seashore and relax here at the Inn by the pool, or rest up in your air conditioned room for more fun later. There are so many activities to enjoy: whale watching, biking, hiking, golfing, fishing, boating, shopping...the list goes on and on. For some great ideas of things to do visit our activities page. All that fun awaits you in just a few short months - summer is getting closer! December 2008 Grandchild's Picture

We are delighted to be busy this winter season enjoying our new grandchild, Ian Steven, born just three weeks ago! Not that we're proud grandparents or anything, but as you can see in the picture, we think he's a real keeper!

We wanted to take a minute to show him off to all of our friends from Harbor Breeze, and to let you know that we will be open through the holidays as usual. We look forward to having some of you with us this season, especially friends and relatives of some of our neighbors visiting at Christmas and/or New Years. If you don't live too far away and are looking for fun this New Year's Eve, stay with us and check out nearby Chatham's "First Night," where you can ring in the New Year with a variety of different events and entertainments!

However you spend this holiday season we hope it will be one filled with peace and joy, and that the New Year is a healthy and prosperous one for you. We look forward to seeing you next Summer, and for those on our early call list, we'll be in touch in February!

Summer 2008

Front GardenIt has been a busy spring! Last Winter the town took down the tree the used to grace our front lawn, and we have spent most of Spring developing a new front garden to welcome our guests. Pictures of it are featured in this issue of Notes from the Sea, but we really hope you'll join us in person to see the new garden! We believe it makes a great introduction and addition to our regular gardens.

This summer is shaping up to be a great one on Cape Cod. For the majority of our guests we are less than a tankful of gas away, making for inexpensive travel to a great desitnation. We have held to last years' rates, hoping to provide great value for your vacation dollar, knowing that a restful time away from the daily stress is more important now than ever! And as always, we welcome families!

We have a new Mexican restaurant here in town, a restaurant with a new name, and your old favorites. Dairy Queen is back in business, and the usual ice cream favorites like Sundae School are still here!

We have made upgrades to some of our rooms, including new fixtures in bathrooms and larger televisions in our Garden Side Rooms. We are ready and excited to welcome back old friends ad to meet some new ones as the summer unfolds!.

Spring 2008

Welcome to Spring 2008! This year it feels like Spring came earlier than ever with the change to Daylight Saving Time at the beginning of March and Easter coming early. Even some crocuses in Harwichport Center were poking their heads up, and a brave if foolish daffodil has broken through the earth in one of our back gardens.

Spring brings new life from winter's frozen ground, and there are some new happenings here at the Inn & Gardens. Two years ago we began a two-phase process of modifying our name. First we wanted to better reflect what we present to the public, so we added " and Gardens" to the Harbor Breeze Inn name. Now that we've been present for a couple of years as Harbor Breeze Inn & Gardens we have added "Allen" to complete our name and to better convey our location at beautiful Allen Harbor. Allen Harbor Breeze Inn & Gardens is our new name and you can learn more about it in this issue of Notes from the Sea. We want you to know that our contact information (phone numbers, emails, website address) and the service in which we take pride remain the same.

Coinciding with our new name was another change involving a sad goodbye to an old tree-friend on the property. The beautiful old poplar tree that graced the front of the property near our sign had taken some pretty significant hits over the past few years as large trucks tore off some of its large lower limbs. After the last wound the tree never fully recovered and the town, which owns trees near the road-line, decided to take it down. While we were sad to see such a beautiful tree come down we know that it was becoming a danger simply by its size, and visibility is now much better for traffic exiting Nehoidan Street. There are pictures of the tree below.

We are looking forward to having old friends back this coming summer season, and to welcoming new ones! We are already beginning to book up for July and August, so give us a call to reserve as soon as you are ready. If you're planning your summer vacation close to home we're right nearby and there's a room waiting for you!
